When people think about attracting and retaining top talent, they often picture big budgets and flashy perks. But as a small business, we know that’s not the only way to build a strong employer brand.
You can also make people want to join your team and stay by using intention, creativity, and genuine care.
At KVA, we’ve built a culture that keeps our team connected, engaged, and excited to show up every day. Here are a few practices that have made a real difference for us and that any company can adapt in their own way:
1. Make connection part of your routine
If you want people to feel connected, you have to make space for it. At KVA, we are a fully remote team, so we’ve had to be intentional about creating opportunities to connect outside of project work. One way we do this is through our “Lunch & Laugh” series, which is a monthly virtual gathering for catching up on life and connecting on a personal level. We also lean on niche Slack channels, like “Bookworms” and “Wanderlust,” to share interests and spark conversation. And twice a year, we make it a priority to gather in person for our annual retreat and holiday party, which help us deepen those relationships face-to-face.
2. Prioritize recognition and celebrate milestones
Consistent recognition and celebration can go a long way in building connection and loyalty. Throughout the year, we love celebrating everything from the small wins to the big life milestones. Whether it’s a quick message in our #KVAKudos Slack channel, delivering someone’s favorite flowers to their doorstep on their birthday, or surprising them with a virtual baby shower, we always try to make a point of acknowledging life outside of work and leading with empathy to build trust.
3. Invest in learning and growth
Small businesses don’t always have big training budgets, but that doesn’t mean development should be overlooked. At KVA, we work hard to tailor learning opportunities to each person so growth feels personal and relevant. We also host monthly “Nerdy 30s,” which are 30-minute focused learning sessions led by team members or guest speakers. These bite-sized experiences keep curiosity alive and show our people that we care about their long-term growth, not just their day-to-day output.
4. Give back in meaningful ways
Culture isn’t only about how you treat your team, but also about how your company shows up in the world. One way small businesses can strengthen their employer brand is by aligning with causes that matter to their people. At KVA, we tie our giving back to both individual passions and organizations that align with our mission as a way to help our team members have a sense of pride in being part of something that has a positive impact on things they care about beyond the business.
At KVA, we’ve seen firsthand that sometimes, the little things can make the biggest impact in building a place where people are proud to work. By focusing on connection, recognition, growth and impact, we are working daily to create an environment where people feel valued, supported, and inspired to do their best work. For small businesses, these experiences and relationships can be just as meaningful as any large-scale benefit. They are often what talent values the most, and they form the foundation of a strong employer brand that attracts and retains the right people.
